CLICK HERE FOR THIS WEEKS GAME SCHEDULE

I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter/Spring Break.  We are looking forward to getting back to some soccer games this weekend.  This weekend marks the half way mark through our season.  I continue to work with new coaches but all our teams have a coach.  If you have any concerns please email me so I can address it.  One quick reminder that our #1 goal is for our children is to have fun.  Microns and Super-Microns parents should be looking for two things during practices and games, touches on the ball (anytime a foot comes into contact with a ball) and is your child having fun.  Once you child moves to U8-Mighty Mights we start working more on specific skills.

Two things effecting this Saturday....   First, looks like we will have some rain in the morning, however I DO NOT expect to cancel any games.  My staff and I worked on fields yesterday so that they will be playable with the rain fall expected.  Second is the Azalea Festival is also this weekend so please expect some missing kids on your teams for morning games.

Please check your schedule as I re-worked the schedules two weeks ago and made some changes.
-U12/U14 will now play a couple Sunday games each this season.
-U8 will now play one game each Saturday on Field 3 (Super Micron Fields)

A picture make-up day will be announced as soon as I get the date from the photographer.

As it warms-up please remember to bring to practices and games....water, sunscreen & bug spray.  (These items are also for sale at our snack bar if you forget.)

Lost & Found:  We have two bins of lost and found, these can be found near the snack bar on the supply side.  (During the week they are inside the supply side of the shed, please help yourself)

A couple dates in coming up:
Sunday, April 11th:  4 PM to 7 PM - Start of our Adult Soccer Pick-up League, come try it free this Sunday, please bring shin guards.
Saturday, April 25th:   Wilmington Healthy Kids Day at Empie Park.  All our Micron games this day will be played at Empie Park as part of the Wilmington Healthy Kids Day event.  (More information will be sent next week to those teams.)
Sunday, April 26th:  USL SOCCER Wilmington Hammerheads Home Game, tickets are available for purchase at the snack bar (these are undated and can be used for any home game).  We sell tickets $1 cheaper than at the game and 15% of sales go back to our Soccer Program here at the YMCA.
Saturday, May 16th:  Free Clinic Day:  This is a free event for all our soccer players from our Spring League.  Come work with the YMCA Soccer Staff on some soccer skills.  We will be offering clinics by age groups.  This is your chance to discuss some of our Summer Soccer Programs for those children that would like to continue with soccer after the Spring Season ends.

DETAILED VERSION  (New Families)
GAME SCHEDULE
Welcome to Week 1, Saturday, March 14th 2015

To those new to the program:  First couple weeks will seem hectic and I assure you it gets better once you get a hang of it.  Please be patient we have several new players and coaches this season.

RAIN/WEATHER:  We play in the rain (the kids love it, parents not so much.)  We only cancel games if there is lighting, thunder and/or standing water on our fields.  Our fields dry quick and weather in NC comes and goes just as quick so we do not cancel until we have too and do it on a game by game basis.  There are two ways we communicate this.  One, on ymcasoccer.playerspace.com you will see a “Field Status” link under “News & Announcements” this will have the most up to date info.  We will also email out from playerspace to teams that are affected by weather so please check your email before leaving to come to the fields.  Due to the fire we do not have internet access from the field so there will be a little delay, I will do my best to cancel as quickly as I can.

What to bring, just shin guards and water.  (Maybe an umbrella.)

TEAM ROSTERS:
All players have been assigned to teams.  All teams have been set with practice times and game times.
If you have issues with assignments please email me at Lee.Spooner@wilmingtonfamilyymca.org and I will address it.  If you do not know your team you should be able to log on at ymcasoccer.playerspace.com to locate this information.

NAC, Need A Coach teams.  Myself and Staff will continue to work with these teams until coaches are placed.  We are actually ahead of the schedule on this as we filled 12 spots in the past week.  (THANK YOU to those that volunteered)  The three remaining spots are being looked at by me everyday.  If you are interested please contact me.  You will be assigned a staff member for the first couple weeks to work with you.  Our league is about kids having fun so there is no pressure to know soccer, we will teach you what to do.

ISSUES/CONCERNS:
I will personally address all concerns and issues, please email them to me.  Our coaches are 100% volunteer, we are a non-profit recreational soccer league.  With over 600 kids in our program, issues will present themselves.  My number one rule....do not argue or fight in front of the children.  As with any competitive sport, emotions get involved.  Remember, it is youth soccer at the YMCA.  I will address issues and concerns, there are 600 of you and one of me, give me time to address (sometimes things need to cool down before I can talk to you).  Our league has enough teams that you more than likely will not play the same team twice this season, so please keep that in mind.

Again, thank you to our League Sponsors for this Spring Season:
America’s Mattress in Leland (Wal-Mart Center) and Power Camps @ www.mgpowercamp.com
With the help of ALL our sponsors….look for them out there this season we wouldn’t be the program we are.

COACHES MEETING

If I have both your children's practices on different days and you need the same day....email me.
If I don't have your child with their friend, email me.
The quicker I get your request the easier it is to accommodate it. I will do my best to get us all playing soccer.

Y Soccer Staff will be on the fields M-F 4 PM to 8 PM and balls/training gear provided.
You will need water and Shin Guards for 5 year olds and up.

COACHES
Coaches are listed on Rosters.  You may see “NAC”, which stands for “Need A Coach”.  For the first two weeks this is normal, do not panic.  This is actually where I started coaching as my son was placed on “NAC” Team, I hid behind other parents the first two weeks.  A coach will appear.  Until this happens, during your child’s practice time we will have a Y staff member coaching the team.  We also cover absences so there will be times we will practice two teams together.  Just know I will be on the fields most evenings.

FIELD DAY
The start of our 2015 Spring Season is FIELD DAY!
Field Day is scheduled for March 7th, 2015.  A schedule of events will be announced February 28th.  It’s a meet and greet day where specific age groups are broken up and will come out meet the Y Staff, Coaches and other players in the program.  Parents will be given the opportunity to ask questions, learn the field layout and see their player interact with our team.  Younger groups will do some basic drills with their coach or a Y staff member and our older groups will play some pick-up games and participate in group training sessions.  This year we may have Sledge from the Wilmington Hammerheads for the younger players and Challenger Sports, which the YMCA is hosting their British Soccer Camp this August,  will be doing a free clinic for our older players.  Coaches are encouraged to work with Challenger to learn new drills.  We will also be looking for parent coaches.  We will explain the role of a coach, our training and what our goal is here at the Y.  In short we are here to have FUN!

GAME SCHEDULES
Will be released on 03/11.  Sooner if available.  They will be posted on playerspace first.

Again, thank you to our League Sponsors for this Spring Season:
America’s Mattress in Leland (Wal-Mart Center) and Power Camps @ www.mgpowercamp.com
With the help of ALL our sponsors….look for them out there this season we wouldn’t be the program we are.

Update Archive:  02/10/15

Hi Y Soccer Family!

As you know, it's been quite the eventful week at the Y. I wanted to touch base and let everyone how this effects our soccer season.

Facility and Fields

Since we will not have use of the outside bathrooms (there is currently no electricity or water to the facility) we have installed 2 port-a-potties for the immediate need. We will continually assess this need and add more as required. Our fields are in great shape and we're looking forward to filling them with our soccer kids.

Office, Communication etc

For the moment, we are without an office. Lee and I are both working from home for computer things and from our phone for emails. We will respond to everything as soon as possible, but please allow 24 hours for a response. Luckily, Playerspace allows us to communicate and schedule easily, so we should see no interruption in the work flow. Please check the Playerspace main page Click here to register for 2015 Spring Soccer since we will post any pertinent information there. As we set the practice schedules, they will also all get entered into Playerspace and notifications sent. We will also send regular email updates with any new information.

Registration and Payment

We had a little glitch earlier in the week with registration, but everything is clear now. Registration is online, live and ongoing! All late fees will be waived through Sunday, February15th so if you have not yet registered, please do so by then. Online payment processing is working just fine. If you are intending to pay by cash or check or need other payment arrangements, please email either myself or Lee at Lee.Spooner@wilmingtonfamilyymca.org so that we can make sure your player gets assigned to a team.

League Info

All of the dates are still the same for the league. The info sheet can be found at http://content.wilmingtonfamilyymca.org/docs/offering/youthDevelopment/youthSports/soccer/ydYouthSportsSoccerSpring2015.pdf
Practice times are once a week for an hour and the day/time is set by the coach. We still need coaches across almost all of the age groups, so if you or anyone you know is interested, please have them contact us. Uniforms will be given to coaches to hand out the week before games begin.

Coaches

Luckily, we have some of the most amazing coaches in the area! All of our coaches are volunteer and a large part of what makes our program great. Any returning coaches, please make sure that you register, email your former team to let them know you're coaching and email Lee or I with your preferred practice day/time (with an alternate if possible) Again, if you are interested in coaching, please let us know!

I'm looking forward to getting back onto the fields and having a fantastic season. Thanks everyone for your help and support, we certainly couldn't do it without you. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to contact either me or Lee.

Barbara Soderman
Sports Coordinator

Update Archive: 02/06/15

Hello Soccer Family,

This is my weekly update to all of you.  I have broken this particular email up into sections which I thought was easier to help with all the questions you may have.  If at any time you have any additional questions please reach out to me.  The quickest way to get a response is email me atLee.Spooner@wilmingtonfamilyymca.org

PLEASE BOOKMARK the following link NOW as it will always have the most up to date information for Spring Soccer throughout the entire season.               http://ymcasoccer.playerspace.com

**THOSE NOT REGISTERED**
Registration is always open, however save $20 and register before February 8th, after this date there is a $20 late fee.
You can register online at the link above.  The number one issue we are currently having is members of the YMCA are not being found during the first question during sign-up.  If this is an issue you are experiencing, click “not a member” and continue with the registration.  There is a question “do you qualify for a discount” chose “Y Member” and then you will be taken to the payment page.  DO NOT PAY, the very last box says “apply for discount”.  I will manually apply the member discount and you will receive a link through your email to finish the registration.

**THOSE REGISTERED AND NOT PAID**
First, thanks for registering.   Players will not be assigned to teams until payment is received.  If you need assistance please reach out to me via email.  I am all about kids playing soccer and can work with you, just communicate with me and once we reach a solution I can assign your child to their team.  Payment reminders will be sent about every 4 days until the start of the season.

**THOSE REGISTERED AND PAID**
I am currently working on team assignments, during this process you may see your player assigned to one team and moved to another a day later.  As we will receive over 200 registrations over the next 10 days it will take some time getting everyone where they need to be.
Just as an FYI this is how I prioritize players to their teams:
1.) Coach Request
2.) Teammate Request
3.) School
4.) Practice Schedule
5.) Experience

Dates to look out for:
                February 21st:                          First Coaches Meeting
February 23rd through 27th:       First Practices for those returning from prior season.
February 27th:                          Final team assignments, coach and practice information sent to all parents.
March 2nd through March 6th:    First Practices for age groups U8 and above.
March 7th:                               Field Day/Meet and Greet – Schedule of events to be announced.

I am excited to start playing soccer, my own kids have not stopped asking me when they are going to start.

Sincerely,
Lee Spooner, Director of Soccer Program here at the Wilmington Family YMCA
Lee.Spooner@wilmingtonfamilyymca.org  /  (910) 251-9622 ext. 232

PS I will be on the fields this Saturday, February 7th from 10 AM to NOON, you are welcome to come out and meet me if interested or would just like to ask a question in person.

We still need coaches!  This is a very rewarding experience and I am here to help you get started with all you need to know.  You do not need to be an expert in soccer.  Coaches give direction but the most important job is ensuring the kids have fun.  If you are interested please reach out to me so we can discuss.  I started out as a coach for my son’s micron team here at the YMCA, I can help you get started.  I have 5 clinics planned prior to the season and will be on-site during the week to assist with our new coaches.

We need team sponsors!  Sponsor your child’s team.  We are a 501c and sponsorships help provide financial-aid so that all kids that want to play soccer can.  We will have over 250,000 visits to our field this spring season so it is great exposure to your business/organization.  (Sponsorship information is on the web link above.)

Update Archive: 01/15/15

Hello Soccer Family,

Welcome to the 1st email of the 2015 Spring Soccer Season!

I am so excited to join the staff here at the YMCA, most of you already know me but for those of you who don’t I will be at the YMCA this Saturday, January 17th from 10 AM to NOON in the front conference room.  There is no agenda for this meeting, just simply a chance to meet me, ask questions about our program or what plans I have for 2015.

Number one question so far is “What happened to Barb?”  So to answer that for everyone….nothing, Barbara is still the Sports Coordinator.  My role is to expand what the YMCA Soccer Program offers and to support our already awesome Spring and Fall Leagues.  Coaches training will be my biggest focus for Spring and Fall.  I am planning on several great soccer summer camps, a Summer Academy League, Adult pick-up League and a Young Coaches/Referee training program for 14 to 16 year olds.

I cannot do this without the support of our Soccer Family.  Our volunteer coaches are some of the best out there and I am very proud to have them part of the family.  If you come out this Saturday or send me an email let me know if you want to coach or would like to help shape our program I would love to hear from you.  I have wanted a committee for a long time, so if interested please let me know.

This Saturday, the travel team program players, families and I will be working on the fields from 1 PM to 5 PM.  We are spreading 2 truckloads of dirt across our fields.  I could really use wheel barrels, spreaders, shovels so that we can get it done quickly.  PLEASE LABEL ALL ITEMS WITH YOUR NAME TO ENSURE YOU GET THEM BACK.    Any volunteers that would like to join us are welcome.

DATES TO REMEMBER:
February 8th        ON-TIME REGISTRATION ENDS – REGISTER NOW
                          http://tinyurl.com/n5lp3xp
February 21st       First coaches meeting.  This gives returning coaches an extra practice week.
February 27th       Practice Time & Coach Information sent out to all paid participants.
March 2th-6th        Week of first official practices.  (Micron’s first day is 3/7/15.)
March 7th             FIELD DAY for entire League – Schedule of Events to be announced.
March 11th           Final Game Schedules sent out to all participants.
March 14th           Games Begin

WE NEED COACHES AND SPONSORS!  If you can help in either area please let me know.  New Coaches will be offered training and continued support during the first two weeks of games.  Coaching my son’s micron team is how I first got involved here at the Y and I have fallen in love with it.  It is rewarding!

I look forward to a FUN Spring Season.

See you on the fields….
